At one time, North America was covered with millions of square miles of virgin forest. The forest canopy was so thick that, as native artist Bill Reid tells the legend, a squirrel could climb a tree on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean and make her way through the boughs till she got to the Mississippi, without ever touching the ground....
